The significance of the name “Alhambra”
Located in modern-day Granada, Spain, the Alhambra functioned historically as a royal palace-city during the reign of the Nasrid Dynasty (1232–1492). For a quarter of a millennium, under the patronage of the Nasrid Dynasty, Granada served as a rare place where Christian and Muslim civilizations came together, in a spirit of tolerance, to pursue commerce, science, and the arts. It is said, at one point, there were more books in Granada than in all of Europe combined. Today, five hundred years after the Nasrids ruled Granada, the Alhambra palace remains one of the world’s great artistic and architectural treasures. In recognition of its cultural value to humanity, UNESCO designated the palace a World Heritage Site in 1984. Seeking a name that embodies the historical spirit of Granada, we pay tribute to the legacy of the Alhambra and invoke its noble values by adopting the name of the Alhambra U.S. Chamber.
